The Fabulous Fox Theatre opened in 1929 as one of the most beautiful movie palaces in the country, and was one of the first theatres in the nation to be built with full "talkie" equipment for the Movietone process. After shutting its doors in 1978, Fox Associates purchased the theatre in 1982 and restored it to its original glory. The theatre now features various concerts, comedy and dance performances as well as touring Broadway productions. The Fox Theatre still has a giant Wurlitzer organ, one of only five of its type ever constructed. The mighty Wurlitzer has four keyboards, 2,700 pipes and 36 ranks. One of the crowning features of the theatre is the 12-foot diameter, 2,000-pound chandelier. It is made of gilded pot metal, enhanced by 2,264 pieces of stained or faceted glass and illuminated by 160 light bulbs, totaling 11,620 watts. The extravagant interior of the Fox is reflected in plaster finishes, which simulate marble, hand stenciled walls, marble bathroom fixtures, leather-lined elevators, gilt paint, glass "jewels," velvet throne chairs and intricately cast brass. The theatre seats 4,500 in an opulent interior of Asian and Indian influences, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Tours are offered every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Tickets for the tour are available at the theatre box office. Reservations required for groups of 20 or more.
