With the opening of the second phase of this $55-million, 300,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art performing arts facility in September 2005, the City of Newport News and Christopher Newport University emerged as a distinctive location for the presentation of world-class performing arts programs. This world-class facility provides a focus for the arts on the Virginia peninsula and serves as catalyst for cultural and economic growth and personal enrichment. The Ferguson Center for the Arts’ superb acoustics and support facilities serves world-renowned talent, regional companies and a variety of community and collegiate arts groups serving as a vital affirmation of the significance the arts play in our daily lives and in our community. An architecturally bold and dynamic environment, the Ferguson Center for the Arts is a remarkable undertaking, not only for the world-class facilities and breathtaking design, but also by its broad roots in the community and its potential for far-reaching effects. Designed by Pei, Cobb, Freed and Partners, the New York architectural firm that has created some of the most celebrated buildings in the world, this facility provides one of the most dramatic vistas in the Commonwealth of Virginia and is rivaled by few communities in America. The Ferguson Center includes a 1,700-seat Concert Hall proscenium theatre, a 500-seat Music and Theater Hall, and a 200-seat Studio Theatre. The Ferguson Center is host to over five hundred events annually including University, community and professional performances. Professional performances will range from Broadway musicals to world-class symphony orchestras to family performances to popular entertainers. Phase one of this remarkable complex opened in September 2004 with an intimate performance by Tony Bennett in the Music and Theatre Hall. The grand opening of phase two was celebrated in September 2005 with a performance featuring Michael Crawford and the New York Pops, capped one month later with a sold-out performance by renowned Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli. Christopher Newport University is an up-and-coming, public liberal arts college, led by former U.S. Senator Paul S. Trible. CNU is located on the Virginia peninsula adjacent to the colonial triangle of Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown; two and one-half hours from Washington, D.C; and 45 minutes from Virginia Beach.
