The community lacked a multi-purpose facility that would house the North Dakota State University football team, to host more entertainment and to attract more tradeshows and expositions. FARGODOME now offers one of its primary tenants, the NDSU football team, a welcome respite from the harsh early winter weather in which it used to play. For hosting popular musical acts, the region has only a small capacity civic center located downtown, and the college campus, both of which are not conducive to staging higher visibility acts. FARGODOME also offers the largest exhibit hall in the state, with a total of 120,000 square feet. Initially, FARGODOME was modeled similar to the Tacoma Dome in Washington. The original design featured an air-structured dome; however, it ended up with a hard roof and is technically not a "dome" at all. What is perhaps the FARGODOME's most important feature is the 33-ton, 21-row movable riser which gives the FARGODOME the ultimate seating flexibility. The riser, designed by the Dant Clayton Corp. of Louisville, KY, can change the house from the football configuration to an intimate basketball or ice hockey setting. It is propelled on 24 air-bearings and uses a 125-horsepower compressor. The FARGODOME opened its doors on December 2, 1992 and celebrated it's 10th Anniversary in 2002. Jam Theatricals proudly presents Broadway in Fargo at the Gate City Bank Theatre at The Fargodome.
